2017 Books and Reading Recap

I almost thought I shouldn’t post my 2017 recap. It feels too late, but what the heck right? It’s my life and dannnnng I love wrap up posts.

  • 2017 was a rough reading year. Starting with the election in 2016 all the way through to the end of 2017, I had little focus, little motivation, little desire to read.
  • I did manage (at the actual last minute) to read 100 stories. I mean literally. 11:59 pm December 31st, I finished my last book.
  • My fiction to non-fiction ratio was lower than I would like. Still 20% nonfiction is better than previous years.
  • My diversity ratio was better than previous years (25% of my reading was what I consider diverse) but I need to do better. I’m shooting for 50% this year.
  • My audiobook reads fell off at the end of the year. Thanks TuneIn. I hope this picks back up.
  • My comics reading really slacked off. Thanks to having two house payments, money is tight. I had to let some (as in all but one) subscriptions go. I also kicked Comixology Unlimited to the curb. (sad face)
  • My average rating was 3.995. Yay free range reading!
  • Longest book was The Girls Complete Collection by the Luna Brothers – 608 pages
  • As you can see below, December was craaaaaazy. I read A LOT. It was glorious.

Here is a link to all the books I read in 2017 (via Goodreads).

All in all, while 2017 may not have brought me the QUANTITY I may have wanted, I definitely had QUALITY. Here’s hoping 2018 is kind to both of us.

The Weekly Menu – Week of January 21

In typical fashion, things did NOT go according to plan last week. Or the week before. If you were to look at my last Weekly Menu post, you will see I planning on breakfast for supper one day that week. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. It WILL happen this week. This week will be interesting, as I seem to have been felled by the weirdest flu EVAH. (By that I mean tired, achy, fevery, and….not much else. Yet.) So, here are my BEST LAID PLANS for the week:

Sunday: I really hope to get some things made for the kids’ lunches this week. Pizza rolls, quiche, calzones…the things they’ll actually eat. AND, since I won’t be watching the Super Bowl with everyone else (!), I may just have some soup or something. Alone. (I’m banned due to having the flu.)

Monday: Dang it, I’m having some breakfast. I will have it! Even if I don’t cook it!

Tuesday: I don’t know how I will be feeling by this point. I’m either be on the road to recovery, or the road to bronchitis. Writing this on Saturday, I think I’ll be feeling better, so let’s keep up the positivity, shall we? As I am making a conscious effort to eat more fish, I think we will have this Crispy Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce recipe I have my eye on. It’s in My Lodge Cast Iron Skillet cookbook and it sounds quick, healthy, and delicious. I think some pasta (for that lovely sauce) will be great with this! Oh! And some roasted asparagus!

Wednesday: The kids love pork chops. There is a Dry Rub recipe, again in My Lodge Cast Iron Skillet cookbook I’d like to try. I think we’ll have that with some rice and green beans perhaps. (I really really like that cookbook.)

Thursday: We eat with my family tonight.

Friday: It’s just me tonight and I’ll probably have leftovers.

Saturday: Depends on our schedule. We usually eat out for lunch and have a “fend for yourself” night for supper.

Here’s hoping I can stick to this! What are you eating this coming week?

Reading: All over the place! I have 3 books going at the moment. I appear to be felled by some form of flu (aches and fever so far, no other symptons #weird) and am just exhausted. So I started The Apparitionists: a Tale of Phantoms, Fraud, Photography, and the Man Who Captured Lincoln’s Ghost by Peter Manseau because who doesn’t want to read about death when feeling like death? I’m also reading Idiot Brain: What Your Brain is Really Up to by Dean Burnett which is crazy interesting. I actually understand the how and WHY I can walk from one room to another and forget why! I was reading Artemis by Andy Weir, but I appear to have left it at work, in my rush to get home after starting to hurt all over and feel like complete crap at work. I suppose it could be in my car, but I have no intention of walking to it. What if I can’t get back??? lol

Watching: I was supposed to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, but apparently no one wants the flu and I have been banned. How rude.

Listening: I haven’t finished to an audiobook since early December. I am SORT OF listening to Age of Myth by Michael Sullivan, which is REALLY good, but my attention span for listening is at an all-time low. So I’ve been binging LOTS of podcasts.

Eating: Not much. It’s kinda scary how little appetite I have. And nothing tastes right.

Loving: My cats. They have been lovely company while I sit around and try to rest.

Looking Forward: To feeling better!

Have a great week! DO NOT GET THE FLU.

It’s Monday!

Y’all. I have been on a reading streak since early December. I’m afraid to say more cause I might jinx it! But, I’m reading Big Fish by Daniel Wallace. I *think* I can finish it tonight. It’s so good, same and different from the movie. I need to watch the movie again for sure.

I have NOT LISTENED TO AN AUDIOBOOK since I listened to Bossypants by Tina Fey in early December. THIS IS A TRAVESTY. I had started listening to Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, read by the INCOMPARABLE Ruby Dee (I am very CAPSY today, AM I NOT?) and OMG it is every bit as amazing as I new Ms. Dee could be. And she was ripping my heart out. RIPPING. And I’m going to go back to it. As soon as I find a minute…. Then I’m going to listen to True Grit by Charles Portis. It’s read by Donna Tartt (yes of The Secret History fame) which I find to be a fascinating choice. I’m not sure if that’s a GOOD fascinating or a BAD one. So, we’ll see.

What are you reading on this gloriously WAY TOO BUSY Monday?

The Weekly Menu – Week of January 21

So, uh, hi! This blogging thing has gotten spotty, hasn’t it? I’m hoping to get back to it now that life seems to have settled down post move/job change/holidays/and general malaise. I’m also hoping to get back to a lot of things, like, reading, cooking, and just chilling in general.

And so, about that cooking…. I’ve been cooking a LOT more lately since we moved. The surprising LACK OF MONEY (hello two house payments! Anyone looking for a house in NC?) has led to much more cooking around here. Yay for saving money and eating healthier!

Here are my plans for this week:

Sunday: Sunday has become something of a prep day around here. I’ll be getting some calzones ready for school lunches, making mini-quiches for quick breakfasts, getting snacks and whatnot together, and making my week easier (hopefully).

Monday: I got a new cast-iron skillet for Christmas and I have YET to grill some pork chops. So pork chops it is! I like them simple; with salt, pepper, and a touch of garlic. Serving it with a side of rice and some grilled veggies.

Tuesday: Hey! It’s my birthday!! I dang well hope I don’t have to cook for my 40th. Here’s hoping we have something good. That I don’t cook. lol

Wednesday: I am really feeling breakfast for supper. Scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and maybe grits? Biscuits? Toast? Jam? PANCAKES?

Thursday: We’ll eat with my aunt and uncle tonight!

Friday: It’ll just me and the hubby so we’ll probably fend for ourselves.

Saturday: Today is my birthday party! The husband is making the meal (again? Score!) and it’ll be for lunch, so I doubt I’ll be wanting much supper. Maybe some popcorn?

Here’s hoping I can stick to this! What are you eating this coming week?

It’s Monday!

I just took a personality test that says I am a Mediator, or INFP-T (Stands for: Introversion (I), Intuition (N), Feeling (F), Perception (P)). I’m not sure I am as “dreamy” as this quiz seems to think I am, but a lot of it hit the mark perfectly. Apparently, we’re rare?

Mediator personalities are true idealists, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people and events, searching for ways to make things better. While they may be perceived as calm, reserved, or even shy, Mediators have an inner flame and passion that can truly shine. Comprising just 4% of the population, the risk of feeling misunderstood is unfortunately high for the Mediator personality type – but when they find like-minded people to spend their time with, the harmony they feel will be a fountain of joy and inspiration.

What are you?

Anyway, reading. What am I reading?!

Well, for one thing, I stayed up WAY PAST MY BED TIME to read more of Beard Science (Winston Brothers, #3) by Penny Reid. These books, in classic Nora Roberts way, center around a family of brothers. 6 brothers. Oh, and one sister. They are all tall, hot, extremely awesome in personality, and bearded. There is one brother in particular, who strikes my fancy and this book is about HIM. So yeah. Couldn’t put it down, much to my body’s chagrin.

I have a feeling I’ll be reading on my phone in the bathroom at work today.

I’m reading other things, but honestly, they won’t matter until I finish THIS BOOK.

What are you reading on this freezing cold Monday?

Reading: I have been VERY FICKLE with my reading lately, however, I THINK I have settled down to three four books. After finishing Grin and Beard It; Winston Brothers #2 by Penny Reid, I had to immediately jump into #3: Beard Science. Romance is not typically one of my favorite genres but gosh darn it. I love this series. I also started The Leavers by Lisa Ko and Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, after they made the Tournament of Books Longlist (OMG WHAT A GREAT LIST THIS YEAR). I’m listening to Exit West, also read by the author, and it’s gorgeous. All in all, great reading going on up in here. The fourth book I’m reading is Rain: A Natural and Cultural History by Cynthia Barnett. I had no idea about rain. NO IDEA.

Watching: I was on vacation last week and I started (finally) binging Supernatural. I have no idea what took me so long, but hey, at least I have a LOT of episodes to watch. I’m also watching The Good Place with my daughter. I just love Ted Danson and Kristin Bell.

Listening: As I said above, I’m listening to Exit West. I’m also listening to lots of podcasts. I had to cancel my Spotify membership and I hate it so much so not much music listening going on right now. It hurts y’all. I am missing my Spotify Free.

I can always count on Oprah, to feel my pain.

Playing: I haven’t been playing much of anything. My husband got the new Skyrim for the VR on the PS4 and he is ALWAYS PLAYING IT. Not really but it feels like it. VR makes me drunk like no ones business, so I haven’t touched it. I need a new, STABLE, game.

Loving: My new house. That reading seems to be back on track *knocks wood* and that Christmas break is coming up.

Looking Forward: To decorating the tree later.
